Hangi Process

Kia ora,

For the last couple of weeks, we have been learning the process to making a hangi. Matua Ken our caretaker, came in to teach us how to dig the hole for a hangi. We are making a hangi for our class to feast on. We have ask our parents if the would come and help with preparing the hangi.
We had to create some sort of DLO to understand the process of a hangi. Yesterday, we learnt how to prepare the hole. I wrote a narrative to explain my understanding of a hangi. My favourite part was being able to explain the process of hangi in our own way. The hardest part was thinking of ideas to explain the process of a hangi hole. The learning behind this was to learn how to prepare a hangi.
Here's my story;
(This the second part, I haven't wrote the first part)

The Preparation of The Hole

1. Find an appropriate clear the piece of land to dig the hole.

2. Clear the loose shrubs, leaves, grass and branches

          and other loose materials that could catch on fire 

          from the area.

3. Water the ground surrounding the area so that if 

          a fire breaks loose it will die out quicker also, 

          it will keep your food/kai moist.

4.  Measure the appropriate area to dig. Use the cooking

           baskets as a n outline. Give a little extra space from 

           the edge of the basket - 30cm.

5. Get a spade and start digging. Dig the hole to the 

          depth of the basket and give room for the rocks 

          and irons. 

6. Gather the wood and prepare inside the hole.

Once Samantha had prepared the food, she found an appropriate piece

of land to dig the hole for her hangi. “Right, now I must clear all these

shrubs, leaves, grass and branches so they don’t catch on fire,”

Samantha whispered. So Samantha skipped back to her old, raged,

cozy cottage that was planted in the dense woods to gather the baskets,

her rake(for clearing the shrubs), watering can, spade, irons and rocks.

After she got back to the site for her hangi, she raked the loose materials

away. All the green, lush shrubs disappeared. All the dry, totally burnable

leaves disappeared, all the soft, squishy and emerald grass disappeared. 

Next, she watered the dry and lumpy soil so that if the fire broke loose

it wouldn’t, burn down the whole woods! “Huh!”  She signed in relieve.

Now, Samantha only had to measure the hole, dig the hole and gather

the wood. “La la la la la la,” she sang as she placed the baskets down

on the moist soil. Samantha started measuring around the baskets

making sure she left a 30cm gap from the baskets and the border of the hole. 

“Wa, waaaa!” Samantha squealed. She couldn’t dig the hole for the hangi.

“What was that?” 

A little boy named Timmy questioned himself. Timmy ran to the hangi site,

only to find poor and helpless Samantha crying her sparkle blue eyes out.

Timmy asked what had happened. Samantha replied murmling “ I can’t

dig the

hole for my hangi, waaa,”  “I bet I can dig it.” Timmy said to Samantha.

Timmy tried and tried but he couldn’t dig the hole. Then, a tiny

baby came along and tried to dig the hole. But the baby could dig the hole!!

told the baby to dig the hole to the depth of the basket and give room for the rocks

and irons. Timmy went off to find some wood for the fire he found some manuka

(for flavour) and totara(to keep the heat in). Timmy quickly gathered some wood

and hurried back to the hole. By then, the baby had finished digging the hole.

Timmy prepared the wood in the hole. Samantha placed the food in the baskets.

Christmas Decorations

Hello everyone,

For the last two days, we have been creating Christmas decorations to sell at our school
Whanua House day. We are doing this to get parents to buy our decorations so that we
have money for next years Ski Trip. 

Kelly and I created a reindeer (Rudolph), Snowman and we each created a toilet roll snowflake.
For our creations we used toilet rolls. To make our reindeer we cut slices on each side of the toilet roll.
Next, we made some earmuffs using pipe cleaners and pom poms. We hot glued them together.
After that, we glued googly eyes on and a big red pom pom for the nose.  We had to make sure
that it was quality over quantity. 

I loved making my snowflake because I could design it myself.
I think I needed to improve my hot gluing skills.

Essential List Spelling

Hello everyone,

Yesterday, we did an activity for our spelling. We were getting prepared for the Essential List Spelling Test. We had to choose 10 random words from list 6, 7 and 8. Next, we made a slideshow. After that, we wrote; how many syllables in the word, a sentence and the root word. My favourite part was choosing the words.  The hardest part was putting some of the words into complex sentences. The learning behind this was to practice the Essential Spelling Lists.

Thank You Letter

Kia ora,

This week, we wrote thank you letters to our grandparents that came to our school Greats and Grands Day. We thanked them for coming. We included a thank you paragraph, enjoyed paragraph and a question. I enjoyed writing the letter. The learning behind this was to learn how to write a formal letter to someone.

Dear Narnie and Grampy,

Thank you very much for coming to Greats and Grands Day. I am truly honoured that you attended the beautiful and terrific day. Thank you for taking part in the fun and exciting games that were played on our lush green field. Also, thank you for the baking that you treated me with and the big smooches you placed on my little cheeks.

The day wouldn't have been as good without you two amazing, loving and funny grandparents.

I am sure you will thank me soon enough for the delicious, oozy fudge that melts in your mouth?

I enjoyed your company on that sunny day.

I truly enjoyed the day with you. I hoped you liked the amazing book about special times with you. I also enjoyed your cheering in the games and the warm, snuggly hugs you gave me.

Animal Report

Kia Ora,
For the last few days, we have been researching about an animal we would want as a pet. I chose a majestic golden pheasant. We first wrote the information which included; diet, scientific name, class, size, life span, description, special trait, home (habitat) and reproduction on a paper template. Then, we transferred it to a slide or draw. My favourite part was learning about the pheasant. The hardest part was learning to say its scientific name Chrysolophus Pictus. The learning behind this was to learn how to write an animal report and to learn about an animal we would want. Mum, this a message for you, BUY ME THIS BIRD!!!!!!!

Margaret Peters Spelling

Kia ora everyone

Today, we sat the Margaret Peters Spelling Test. I scored 46 which gives me a spelling age of 12.9.

At the beginning of the year, I scored 43 and had a spelling age of 12.6.

So, I improved my spelling age by 1.3 years.

I think I got this result because I am reading harder and more complex books. I also think I got this score because I I am always on task.

Hot Air Balloon

Hello,
Last Friday, Miss Fletcher came into our class to do science with us.  The experiment was hot air balloons. We wrote a prediction of what would happen when we put some water in a bottle with; yeast and sugar and then put a balloon on top. The balloon inflated! We wrote observations. After that, we did some research about our wondering questions. We discovered that CO2 was the gas inflating the balloon. My favourite part doing the research. The hardest part was doing the prediction, because I already knew what was going to happen. The learning behind this was to observe about chemistry.
